But all it means is the height (or distance) from the surface of the water that the equipment can pump the water. After water reaches a certain height,the output of water will become zero. You can also come to know of the water pressure that equipment can provide. But remember that other factors including the length of pipe-work used and inadequate maintenance will affect output once the pump is in use.
If you are fitting a pump that will power a fountain,you will need to consider the effect of the water spurting out of the fountain. The greater the maximum head,the higher the water will spray into the air.
